Our friends down south seem to have some skewed priorities. They are sending a fellow to prison for up to ten years for piracy by way of a website he helped administrate called Elitetorrents.com
If you play the game, and get caught, then by all means … He must pay restitution. But ten years for moving things that were not even originally copied by these people – sure, it’s great to make an example of the poor guy, but it is extremely excessive when killers get 10 months and a couple years of probation.
A interesting yet sad factoid: 13 million people were sent to jails in 2007 in the USA. This is from the US Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Statistics reports. I personally feel that they should work on fixing what ails America (No, I don’t think there’s an overnight solution), and focus on the causes of the violence and crime. Don’t let big business dictate the laws and targeting of individuals.
